Obit of Barbara Sheldon:
Barbara Sheldon Linduska -- January 21, 1946 - August 16, 2022 Barbara S. Linduska, 76, of Salisbury, MD died August 16 at Tidal Health, in Salisbury, MD.
Born in Bridgeport, CT, she was the daughter of Frederick C. and Mary Q. Sheldon. Barbara grew up in Southport, CT, the oldest of two children. Education was very important in the Sheldon household. Her parents wanted their children to become life-long learners. It was at an early age that she decided that she wanted to be a teacher. Following her graduation from Notre Dame Catholic High School, Barbara followed her dream and pursued a career in teaching and Spanish at Trinity College of VT in Burlington, VT. Upon graduation, she continued her educational pursuits as a teaching assistant in Spanish at the University of Maryland College Park in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and then as a Spanish teacher at High Point Senior High School, Beltsville, MD. In 1970, she married the love of her life, Jim (a doctoral candidate in entomology at the University of Maryland College Park). In 1971, she was hired by Stephen Decatur High School to develop and implement a foreign language program. She remained as a Spanish teacher at Stephen Decatur High School until her retirement in 2002, thirty-one years later.
To foster language learning and nurture a love for the arts, she provided cultural enrichment field trips in the region for Spanish students. In addition, she planned and chaperoned numerous school-sponsored foreign language trips to Europe and Mexico. She loved teaching and cared deeply for her students. She wanted her charges to succeed, and to this end, encouraged them to set goals and then worked to help them achieve them.
Throughout her thirty-one (31) years at Stephen Decatur, Barbara was extremely involved. She represented the county at numerous state foreign language meetings and at the time of her retirement, she was Foreign Language Department Chair and Co-Advisor of the National Honor Society; as well a member of numerous other school and community committees. Other activities in which she was involved include J.V. and Varsity Cheerleading Coach, American Field Service (AFS) Advisor and member of the Faculty Council. She chaired the Steering Committee for the high school's 1976 Middle State's Evaluation and in 1997-'98 was part of the three member Blue Ribbon writing team (Stephen Decatur was named a 1998 Maryland Blue Ribbon School).
In retirement, Barbara enjoyed pursuing her interests--gardening, cooking and canning, reading, outings with "the girls," and most especially, traveling with her husband, Jim. She was a prior member of the National Education Association, the Maryland State Teachers Association and the Worcester County Teachers Association, Alpha Delta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, and the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore Education Committee. She was also a current member of St. Francis de Sales/Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and the Walking Club at the Centre of Salisbury. Barbara will be remembered for her love of life, caring nature and love for family and friends.
She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Dr. James Joseph Linduska, a brother, Robert R. Sheldon (Deborah) of Fairfield, CT, nephews, Jeffrey D. Sheldon (Lisa) of Norfolk, MA, Christopher R. Sheldon (Monica) of Stamford, CT and Brian P. Sheldon (Amanda) of Monroe, CT, five great-nephews, Ryan J. and Nathaniel J.
