With eagerness, joy, and a touch of triumph, the Trinity College of Vermont graduating class tumbled down the front steps of the Ira Allen Chapel in the spring of 1968.
Continue on, oh gentle readers…. Re-visit, renew, and update. You’ll need a cheat sheet so unearth a copy of your yearbook and get ready to enjoy the contrasts between ‘then’ and ‘now’.
You’ll be reminded of the curfews, being ‘campused’ by Sr. Edmond, only one rotary telephone attached to the wall down the hall, early morning Mass in cap and gown, plus walks to UVM Campus, Billings Library, downtown Burlington, and the Mill.
Clear images appear – slipping and sliding up and down the hill to and from classes through knee-deep snow surrounded by brilliantly sparkling birch trees, Lake Champlain, Mt. Mansfield, and the achingly beautiful blue skies.
Sharing the sweetness and joy of lifelong friendships, falling in and out of love, plus the bittersweet awareness of what awaited after graduation – yikes – earning a living and ‘real’ life – these Vermont college girls were on their way to becoming ‘citizens of the world.'
Watch the swan-like evolution of gawky young teenagers pirouetting, (at times even gracefully), into personal, professional, scholarly, artistic, business, and civic endeavors. Enhanced with newly minted college degrees, a new-found confidence, plus a sprinkling of courage these classmates were faced with a whole new range of personal, professional, and emotional choices over seemingly uncharted waters – at times exhilarating while also somewhat overwhelming.
Having grown up in a traditional world in which most moms managed homes and children, this graduating class faced intriguing choices. Neither Users’ Manuals, role models, nor any rules of engagement existed for young women who would travel this unimaginable journey. Any inkling of becoming the poster children of the “Boomer” generation was as yet not even a concept. Amidst a backdrop of the assassinations of MLK and RFK, the Tet offensive, Watergate, the Pentagon Papers, and the impeachment of the President of the United States, naiveté may have been a welcome companion.
Who are these ‘citizens of the world’, you may ask? How did they become who they are today?

Keep in mind, however, this is but a brief preview – a teaser, if you will -- for the upcoming June 2018 Burlington Vermont gala celebration for this class – a uniquely rare chance to share a lively and engaging continuation of these stories. Make your reservations, renew friendships and create new ones – but most of all ENJOY the ride….
